  • Check your local building codes regarding zoning laws, boundaries, and placement before building a shed
  • Decide what type and size of shed or garage you will build (garden shed, storage shed, etc..).  Below is a list of what you need to know before starting the project.  Woodworking4home, Teds Woodworking, and MyShedPlans contains this information
    • Materials List
    • Step By Step Building Instructions
    • Skid and Joint Outlay & Stud Placements
    • Full Blown Detailed Illustrations, Roof Plan & Rafter Details
    • How to Build a Shed- Instructions and Illustrations (This is what is the most helpful).  If you have a plan to follow you will do it correctly and it will save time. It is much better to build according to diagrams and blueprints than to wing it on your own.  I am sure your time is as precious as ours
  • Apply for building permit if needed in your area-cost is usually figured by the size of the shed
  • Call your local utility companies to have them check for buried gas lines, telephone lines, cable lines, and electrical lines if any digging needs to be done.  Remember, safety first.
  • Gather tools such as saws, hammers, framing guns, levels, measuring tape etc..
  • Purchase materials from local building supply store.  Use the materials list you have printed from woodworking4home.  Go to the contractor service counter and ask the customer service rep to gather the materials and pay for it or you can gather everything yourself.
  • Prepare Foundation-some areas of country require footings others don’t.  You will have to check your local building codes.  This will also depend on what type of shed you are building.  No matter what type of shed or building you erect, it will need a good foundation.
  • Frame Floor and Sheath Floor
  • Frame and Erect Walls
  • Frame Roof
  • Frame Overhangs and Install roof sheathing
  • Install doors and windows
  • Install exterior siding, trim, fascia boards, shingles
  • Caulk nail holes and paint

Building a shed should be an easy and logical process but can be complicated without the step-by-step detailed building blue prints, materials list and how to build a shed instructions and illustrations from Woodworking4home.
