WOOD WORKING PLAN
You don’t need some silly wood working plan, right? One of the joys of crafting do-it-yourself projects is that there’s no one standing over your shoulder telling you what you’re doing wrong, or how you should make the next cut. Often when working in our shops, the mistakes we make teach us the most about what we do.
Sure, you’re a great builder. You’ve got the birdhouses, playhouses, doghouses, and plenty of other types of houses to prove it.
However, there are strong reasons for using a wood working plan from Woodworking4home on your next build. Stepping away from the “make it up as we go mentality “, here are three reasons to consider why bringing a wood working plan the next time you walk into your workspace is a good idea.

Make it Count
You might be a master of mahogany and a guru of grain, but everyone makes mistakes now and then regardless of skill level or experience. As we said before, learning from your mistakes is a valuable part of building your craft, but there are plenty of circumstances (final glues, joint cuts, dimensioning the raw wood) in which having clear instructions on what to do next can prevent a lot of heartache, and possibly a lot of expense. “Measure twice, cut once” may be the working rule, but there’s nothing that says you shouldn’t have a little help along the way.
Learn New Skills
A great wood working plan can not only help you build something you’re already good at more efficiently or in a new way, but it can also give you an idea for a project you would have never considered before you looked at it. At a certain point in your crafting career, you will inevitably hit a wall and run out of ideas. When this happens, look around and find a wood working plan on a project you’ve never built before, or maybe one that uses skills you don’t traditionally deal in. Are you great with a router? Try building something that utilizes a lathe! Love to build tables? How about some chairs to match?
Benefit From the Experience of Others
You may know your way around a shop and think you can use every tool in the book, but it’s a guarantee that somewhere out there is someone that knows more than you do and wants to share it with the world. People who are passionate about building with wood will often take projects they love to work on and dedicate entire guides to them. This allows other builders to try new things, but it also gives you the benefit of the many years of experience and expertise that particular builder brings to the (router) table.
No matter what sort of builder you may be, you will find that using a wood working plan on your next project will save you time and money, not to mention help inspire new ideas and personal touches that might not have occurred to you before. There are tons of places out there to find these plans; our favorite is Woodworking4home. They’ve got over 14,000 projects available for download, and each one is delivered in an easy to read and detailed pdf file, complete with pictures. If you consider yourself a serious woodworker, you should definitely give their plans a look.
